Frequently Asked Questions for Hosts

So how do I offer a dialogue in my community?

Your first step is to bring together three or four people from different groups to host a dialogue. Ideally, these people will come from groups that don't usually work together. This mix is important as it will help ensure that your dialogue includes people with different experiences and perspectives on health care.

We give you detailed suggestions for each step in the Guide for Dialogue Hosts.

How long is a dialogue?

The dialogue is usually scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This includes half an hour for registration and morning hospitality as well as lunch and other breaks.

Who gets invited to a dialogue?

The dialogue brings together 25 to 40 people. The ideal group will reflect your community and the mix of ages, races, ethnicities, professions, incomes, education levels and experiences with health care.

How do you get a mix of people together for a day-long dialogue?

This is a challenge and our experience shows it can be done. You will want to choose hosts who have strong relationships with people in your community. People attend when they receive a personal invitation from people they know and trust.

How much does it cost to host a dialogue?

Expenses for a dialogue vary. In many communities, organizations are generous in donating meeting space, photocopying, food and other goods and services. A sample budget is included in the Guide for Dialogue Hosts.

How do I go about finding other hosts?

Talk to leaders of groups you belong to or work with: chamber of commerce, church, clinic, business, social service agency, union, neighborhood association, or other group. Tell them why you are concerned about health care and invite them to share their views. Suggest that you work together to help improve our healthcare future by hosting a dialogue. Invite them to learn about the dialogue by watching the health care dialogue video and visiting this web site.

What if we have a question or need help?

The dialogue design team has worked to make guides for hosts and facilitators clear and complete. However, we know that questions and concerns not answered in these guides may arise. You can get a response to such questions in two ways.

First, this site includes a forum for hosts and facilitators where you can post questions and invite experienced hosts/facilitators to respond.

Second, the design team offers consulting. Please contact the design team for more information.
